book cover

“Somewhere inside me is a merciful, forgiving person. Somewhere there is a girl who tries to understand what people are going through, who accepts that people do evil things and that desperation leads them to darker places than they ever imagined. I swear she exists, and she hurts for the repentant boy I see in front of me.
But if I saw her, I wouldn't recognize her”

The story started in post-apocalyptic Chicago where the society was divided into five factions: Abnegation, the selfless, Amity, the peaceful, Candor, the honest, Dauntless, the brave, Erudite, the intelligent. In that society, all sixteen years old children were tested and then they participated in the Choosing Ceremony. Those who did not complete initiation ended up in factionless, living in the streets.
Here this story was told by a sixteen years old girl named Beatrice Prior. Her parents were Abnegation. So, she was in a great dilemma about whether to stay at Abnegation or not. She was confident that her brother, Caleb was going to stay at Abnegation.

In the next day, the aptitude test started and she was tested by a dauntless, Tori. Shockingly, her results were inconclusive proving Beatrice was a Divergent. Divergent were those whose mind worked in a million times at the same time and were fit for all the groups. Tori and Beatrice both were freaking out about this result. Tori told her not to tell anyone about her result and she would enter her result as Abnegation manually. At the time of leaving the room, Tori told her that if she told this to anyone, she would be dead.

The next day was the choosing ceremony where every sixteen years old candidate had to choose their desirable faction. There Caleb chose Erudite, the intelligent and Beatrice chose Dauntless, the brave. After the choosing ceremony, the candidates went to their respective factions.

The new Dauntless were instructed to jump into the train that would lead to their den. Then they were again instructed to jump onto the roof. Most of the candidates made it except one. She fell from the train during the jump. Then they were instructed to jump into the entrance of their en from the roof. Beatrice was the first one to take the leap. At the bottom, she met her instructor Four, and also when he asked her name she told that her name was Tris.
They were ordered to leave everything they brought with themselves including their clothes. They were given new clothes. Then Eric, the leader of Dauntless told them about the rules to become a Dauntless member. Only the top 10 could join Dauntless, others would become factionless. Now the befriends candidates were into conflicts with others.

In the first stage, the candidates were trained in guns, knives, and hand to hand combat. Tris stood sixth. When the result of the first stage was announced Peter came second and Edward came first. Out of jealousy, Peter stabbed Edward in his eye and forced him to become factionless. After that Edward's girlfriend, Myra became factionless too.

On Visiting Day, Tris came to know that Erudite was going to seize the Abnegation rule. The rumor spread that Tris, Caleb and Marcus's son left Abnegation.

Here came stage two, candidates had to overcome their deepest fear by hallucination. As Tris was divergent, she had a great advantage at this stage. This pushed Tris's rank. Out of fear Peter, Al and Drew attacked Tris, but Four intervened. Later, Al begged Tris for her forgiveness, but out of rejection from her, he committed suicide.

Four came to know that Tris was divergent. So,  he tried to help her by letting her into his fear. There she came to know that Four had four fears. His real name was Tobias and he was the son of  Marcus.
Even the abuse from Marcus to his son was also true. Later a relationship emerged between Tris and Four.

Four revealed the plan of Erudite. He told Tris that Erudites were planning to stage an attack on Abnegation by Dauntless. Later all the Dauntless members were injected by a tracker serum given by Erudites. The serum transformed Dauntless members into hypnotized soldiers and attacked Abnegation. As Tris was divergent, it didn't affect her and Four. Later Tris was shot and four was captured and Four was taken to Jeanine, leader of Erudite and mastermind of the attack. She injected Tobias with the serum and she turned him into a soldier too. Jeanine kept Tobias to her, he was monitoring the attack from the control room.
Here Tris was about to drown into a tank but was saved by her mother later who was found to be a divergent too. She was shot to death by mind-controlled Will, which she retaliated by killing him. Then her father and Marcus. They explained everything to her regarding the attack. Then they fought their way to Dauntless headquarters. There her father sacrificed himself to save them. Tris was attacked by a mind-controlled Tobias. It was found that Tobias was too much for Tris. So, Tris surrendered to him. This brought Tobias back to his senses. Then they both attacked Jeanine and freed the mind-controlled Dauntless soldiers.

Later they rejoined the rest of the Dauntless soldiers and board the train to Amity to meet the rest of the Abnegations.

“Becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it”
